起初，助听器的作用就是将声音放大，包括那些不必要的吵杂声。这样，使用者无法得到更好的生活素质且因为这些吵杂声而受到困扰。 如今，我们能看见数位科技已将助听器里的麦克风带入了新的阶段。这些麦克风在接收到声音以后，将它们转为电流。这些电流则马上被声音处理器分析。根据电脑里的程序解析与选择适当的频率后，这些频率则将转变成更强大的声波。这个科技除了提高了声音的品质，同时也减低了噪音的干扰，从而带来了更舒适的听觉。 听觉程度、电脑的解析、麦克风的数量、声音处理技术、环境的噪声水平、使用者的意识程度与经验和立体声或单声道的听觉都会影响使用者佩戴助听器的舒适度。 然而，如今还未有能够消除噪音的助听器。有些声音对于一些人而言是非常吵杂，而对另一些人而言则是舒适的。与图书馆的环境比起来，巴杀里的声音则会显得非常吵杂。我们必须学会接受嘈杂声正是我们生活中的一部分的事实。
